Mastodon Integration
Cross-post to and from any Mastodon instance automatically.
How it works
Connect your Mastodon account by entering your instance URL and authorizing Ferryman. Works with any Mastodon-compatible server — mastodon.social, fosstodon.org, hachyderm.io, your own self-hosted instance, or any other.
Why cross-post to Mastodon
Mastodon is smaller than X, Bluesky, or Threads, but the audience is genuinely distinct. Open-source contributors, academics, journalists at major outlets, sysadmins, and security researchers tend to cluster on the fediverse in numbers you don't see anywhere else. If those audiences matter to you, Mastodon is the only way to reach them at scale — they've opted out of the commercial platforms on purpose.
The platform's vibe is also different in ways that matter for distribution. There's no algorithm. No ads. No quote-tweets in the traditional sense. Engagement is lower-volume but higher-substance — conversations tend to actually be conversations rather than dunk threads. For thoughtful content that does poorly under the X firehose, Mastodon can be a much better reading environment for the audience you actually want.
The cost of maintaining a Mastodon presence used to be real: you had to learn instance norms, find your people, post in their style. With cross-posting via Ferryman, that cost collapses — you keep posting natively wherever you already do, and your Mastodon presence stays current in the background.
Understanding the fediverse, briefly
Mastodon isn't a single website like X or Bluesky — it's a network of independent servers (called “instances”) that talk to each other. Think of it like email: you have an account on one server (e.g., mastodon.social), and you can follow and message users on any other server.
For cross-posting, the only thing this changes is setup: you tell Ferryman which instance you're on (the part after the @ in your handle), and Ferryman authenticates against that server. Posting behavior is the same regardless of instance. Once connected, you don't need to think about the fediverse plumbing — your posts go out, your followers see them, the federation handles itself.
What gets synced
- Text posts with hashtags and mentions (up to 500 characters; some instances allow more)
- Images and media attachments (up to 4 per post)
- Alt text on images — preserved from source platform and especially valued on Mastodon
- Long posts automatically split into native threads via in_reply_to
- Link previews
Use Mastodon as your origin
If the fediverse is your home, set Mastodon as your origin platform and let Ferryman push your posts to X, Bluesky, Threads, and LinkedIn. Common pattern: write thoughtfully on Mastodon, let the cross-posts handle presence on the commercial platforms.
Setup
- Sign in to Ferryman
- Go to Settings and click Connect next to Mastodon
- Enter your Mastodon instance URL (e.g., mastodon.social)
- Authorize Ferryman on your instance
- Enable cross-posting and select Mastodon as a target (or origin)
Tips for cross-posting to Mastodon
- Alt text isn't optional. Mastodon's culture treats alt text on images as a baseline expectation. Ferryman preserves alt text from your source post — adding it on the source platform is the most respectful thing you can do.
- Hashtags do more work here than elsewhere. Without an algorithm, hashtags are how Mastodon users discover topics. A couple of relevant tags per post genuinely helps reach the right people.
- Engagement numbers will look low. Mastodon has fewer users than X, and no engagement-baiting algorithm. A “successful” Mastodon post is one that gets a handful of thoughtful boosts and replies — not one that goes viral.
- Don't cross-post engagement-bait or hot takes. Content that thrives on X drama tends to get a chilly reception. Use #noferry on posts that wouldn't land without the X context.
- Federation respects local norms. If your instance has rules about content (e.g., requiring content warnings on certain topics), those still apply. Ferryman posts unmodified — you're responsible for following your instance's rules.
Frequently asked questions
Does Ferryman work with any Mastodon instance?
Yes. Ferryman supports any standard Mastodon-compatible server — mastodon.social, fosstodon.org, hachyderm.io, or your own self-hosted instance. You provide your instance URL during setup and Ferryman authenticates against it.
How do I find my Mastodon instance URL?
Your instance URL is the domain after the @ in your Mastodon handle. If your handle is @yourname@mastodon.social, your instance URL is mastodon.social. If you joined via a custom server, that domain is your instance.
Does Mastodon's longer character limit on some instances affect cross-posting?
Mastodon's default character limit is 500, and some instances raise this. Ferryman uses the standard 500-character limit when cross-posting to Mastodon, so longer source posts are split into a thread.
Can I use Mastodon as my origin platform?
Yes. Set Mastodon as your origin and Ferryman will sync your Mastodon posts to X, Bluesky, Threads, and LinkedIn. This is a popular setup for creators who consider the fediverse their home.
Are images and alt text preserved when cross-posting to Mastodon?
Yes. Up to 4 images per post are uploaded to your Mastodon instance, and alt text is preserved from the source platform. Mastodon's accessible-by-default culture makes alt text especially appreciated by your audience there.
Is cross-posting to Mastodon free?
Every account starts with a 7-day free trial, so you can try Mastodon cross-posting before you're billed. Cancel anytime before the trial ends and you won't be charged.
