Instagram Integration
Automatically cross-post images and videos to Instagram.
How it works
Connect your Instagram account via Meta OAuth. When you post images or videos on your origin platform, Ferryman automatically publishes them to Instagram — the text from your source post becomes the Instagram caption, the media gets uploaded, and you don't have to remember to open the Instagram app.
Why cross-post to Instagram
Instagram remains the largest social platform with serious creator monetization. Even if Instagram isn't where you personally create, posting there expands your reach into an audience that overlaps surprisingly little with X, Bluesky, or LinkedIn. Visual content from your other platforms can find a meaningfully larger audience here.
The algorithm is also more forgiving than it's often reputed to be. You don't need Instagram-native production values to start getting reach — consistency, a clear visual subject, and a hook in the caption's first line will outperform high-production-value posts that skip those basics. For creators who already make visual content on X (charts, screenshots, videos), cross-posting captures Instagram reach with effectively zero extra work.
Reels in particular have outsized reach potential. A video that did fine on X or TikTok can get 10x the views on Instagram simply by existing there — the platform is still aggressively boosting Reels to compete with TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
What gets synced
- Image posts with captions
- Multi-image carousel posts (up to 10 images per post)
- Video content as Reels (Creator plan)
- Text from your original post is used as the Instagram caption
- Hashtags from the source post are preserved (first 30, per Instagram's cap)
Note on Instagram limitations
Instagram is available as a target platform only (not as an origin). Due to Instagram API restrictions, Ferryman can't reliably detect new Instagram posts in real time the way it can on X or Bluesky. So content flows into Instagram from your other platforms, but not the other way.
Because Instagram requires media on every post, text-only posts are skipped for Instagram automatically. Posts with images or videos cross-post normally; the Posts page in Ferryman shows you which posts went where, including any that were skipped for Instagram and why.
What content cross-posts well to Instagram
Not every post from your other platforms makes sense on Instagram. The ones that do tend to share a few traits:
- Charts, dashboards, screenshots. If you regularly share data visualizations, product screenshots, or build-in-public progress on X, those cross-post well to Instagram — they're visually distinctive and uncommon in the Instagram feed.
- Short videos. Vertical videos under 60 seconds work as Reels; the algorithm will push them to non-followers far more aggressively than image posts.
- Photo posts with story. A photo with a caption explaining context tends to outperform a photo posted without explanation. Your X caption is often already structured this way.
- Carousels. If you have multiple related images, posting them as a carousel tends to outperform multiple single-image posts. Instagram's algorithm gives carousels extra reach.

Tips for cross-posting to Instagram
- Caption first lines are critical. Instagram truncates captions after the first ~125 characters with a “...more”. Whatever you write at the top of your X post becomes that hook — leading with the punchline pays off across both platforms.
- Hashtags do more here than on X. Unlike X (where hashtags do little) or LinkedIn (where they're decorative), Instagram still uses hashtags for discovery. Including 5–10 relevant tags in your source post boosts Instagram reach materially.
- Don't over-cross-post. Instagram users follow accounts for specific content types. Mixing too many topics in one feed dilutes engagement. If your X posting is very diverse, consider creating a topic-focused Instagram account specifically for cross-posts.
- Don't expect Stories. Ferryman cross-posts to the main Instagram feed (regular posts and Reels). Stories are out of scope — they have their own ephemeral cadence that doesn't map well to cross-posting.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Instagram available as a target but not as an origin?
Instagram's Graph API doesn't expose the data feeds we'd need to reliably detect new posts as they're created. So Instagram is a one-way target — content flows from your other platforms into Instagram, but not the other way.
Do I need an Instagram Business or Creator account to use Ferryman?
Yes. The Instagram Graph API requires a Business or Creator account connected to a Facebook Page. Personal Instagram accounts don't expose the publishing endpoints that Ferryman uses.
What kinds of posts get cross-posted to Instagram?
Posts with media (images or videos) cross-post to Instagram as standard feed posts. Text-only posts are skipped for Instagram since the platform requires media. The text from your original post is used as the Instagram caption.
Does Ferryman support cross-posting Reels?
Yes. Videos from your source platform are cross-posted to Instagram as Reels on the Creator plan. Aspect ratio and length are adjusted to fit Instagram's Reel requirements.
Can I cross-post Instagram Stories?
Not currently. Ferryman cross-posts to your Instagram feed (regular posts and Reels). Stories are out of scope for now.
How do hashtags work on Instagram cross-posts?
Hashtags from your source post are preserved in the Instagram caption. Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post — Ferryman keeps the first 30 if your source post somehow exceeds that.
